General election ends with hung parliament

General election ends with hung parliament

The Conservative leader, David Cameron, has made an offer to the Liberal Democrats to form a coalition government after the general election resulted in a hung parliament.

The Tories won most seats but were still short of a majority decided to make a "big open and comprehensive offer" to the Lib Dems.

Gordon Brown, leader of the Labour party, has already made it clear that his party and the Liberal Democrats have strong "common ground".

Practice in British government is that the sitting prime minister in a hung parliament will have the right to make the first attempt at forming a government.

Mr Brown said that he was willing to see any of the party leaders, but also respects Nick Cleggs statement that he wants to make contact with Cameron first.
